Florence High School Junior Wins Ethics Essay Contest On May 9th, Bonnie McCalley, Essay Coordinator for The Williams Institute, presented Cordero Salazar, a junior at Florence High School, with a $500 scholarship for his winning essay on this year’s topic, “The World Around me and My Personal Responsibility.” Salazar was one of 30 winners representing schools as far away as New York and Korea. Lowes Steps Up to the Plate at Florence High School In 1975, Florence Unified School District passed a bond and among the projects funded was a new baseball field for Florence High School. Nearly 40 years later, the fields are still in use, but the dugouts had become dilapidated, with rotting wood and roofs that leaked. Now, thanks to a “Toolbox for Education” grant from Lowes and the efforts of the FHS Advanced Construction class, the baseball dugouts are once more new and leak-free. Four Poston Butte High School Students Earn Athletic Scholarships Poston Butte High School coaches, parents and staff celebrated athletic scholarships earned by four seniors in a commitment signing ceremony held in the main gym on Monday April 30th. The students are: Eric Augustine, Joel Lynde, Shane Gereg and Steve Henry.
As members of the first graduating class, these students have been breaking ground on new traditions for three years. “We’ve been leaders ever since we’ve been here,” stated Augustine. “There were no older students to help show us the way. We set the standard.”
Lynde added, “We’ve had a lot of coaches, though, and they pushed us to be the best we could be. They inspired us.” Click on the article title to read the rest of the story! Copper Basin Students Medal at Statewide Science Fair Copper Basin K-8 students competed this month at the 2012 Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) at the Phoenix Convention Center, bringing home an impressive 31 awards in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. “Copper Basin’s participation is an endeavor sponsored by teachers Lori Grantham and Shannon Lisko,” stated Principal Joanne Pike. “They work very hard along with our kids to promote the sciences. I am very proud of our teachers as they take on this very large project with great enthusiasm and style. Our kids are exposed to tremendous innovative ideas through this program, which ties in perfectly with STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics]. FUSD Participates in National Victim's Rights Week In observance of National Victim's Rights Week and in support of FUSD's Anti-Bully stance, volunteers from the Community Services Division of the Pinal County Attorney's Office were in all of our schools on Monday or Tuesday this week (April 23 or 24), handing out flyers about Anti-Bullying, Victim's Rights, online resources, and FREE PENCILS! (Free pencils were very popular ;-) Coordinator and volunteer, Ginger Butcher, stated, "All of the advocates that went into the schools had nothing but great things to say about the experience and their interactions with your wonderful students."
